   Resistive touch screens are generally built with two layers of electrically conductive materials (ITO Indium Tin Oxide or ATO Antimony Tin Oxide) separated by insulated dots. When an object touches the device, the two layers come into contact and produce a change in the electrical current for the device to register the signal as an analog touch event. The signal is then sent through the circuit to be converted into a digital signal by the controller for the device to compute the exact location of the touch event.

Consumer Market


GPS navigation systems and tablet PCs are the most common products in the consumer market to adopt 5-wire resistive touch screens. The typical vehicle GPS navigation system comes with a touch screen that is 5.6” – 7” in size. Due to the unique operational environment in a vehicle, the device is very likely to be exposed to drastic changes in ambient temperature. Given such consideration, manufacturers are required to pay special attention to the selection of materials. Since the manufacturing processes involved in the production of 5-wire resistive touch screen is superior to that of 4-wire resistive touch screen, 5-wire resistive touch screens will offer better performance in applications where resistance to high temperature is critical. Couple that with the advantage of operability even if the ITO FILM sustains scratch/gouge type damage, 5-wire resistive touch screens are better suitable for GPS navigation systems.
Most tablet PCs adopt electromagnetic digitizer panels, which offer high resolution, fast response, and Z-axis sensing capabilities. These features make the panel suitable for illustration and handwriting recognition. However, electromagnetic digitizer panels are also more costly in comparison and the device is inoperable without a designated stylus. Given the 5-wire touch screen’s price advantages and the convenience of finger and stylus use, it is entirely possible for tablet PCs to gradually achieve greater adoption in this type of application if hand rejection technology were to be incorporated. If we were to ignore the pressure-sensitive illustration capabilities offered by electromagnetic digitizer panels, 5-wire resistive touch screens serves as a practical alternative.

 

Industrial and Commercial Market


Touch screen applications in the industrial and commercial markets demands high reliability and stability. In the event of malfunctions, the products must offer a sufficient buffer period for immediate maintenance or replacement. Typical products that adopt 4-wire resistive touch screens are rendered inoperable when surface scratches and gouges occur.  A malfunction creates down time which translates to financial losses.
5 wire resistive is the appropriate touch technology for applications where reliability and continuous functionality is critical.  Advantages include: a superior design where the x and y axis ITO is patterned on to a non-flexing film giving the 5 wire 35 X the actuations over 4 wire resistive. Also, the manufacturing process creates a touch screen that is resistant to moisture and changes in heat.  Finally, the design of 5 wire allows for extreme abuse of the interface layer without functionality issues.  4 wire touch screens are much more sensitive to abusive “touch” and can lose linearity or become inoperative. Industrial and commercial applications require rugged “work horse” products and 5 wire resistive touch is the user interface of choice.
